October 7, 2022

Dear YES Prep families,

We hope your first week in October is off to a great start. Many of our students and families have already had a chance to celebrate Latinx Heritage Month at their school. For those who haven’t yet, check out your school communications to learn when your celebrations are scheduled for. This week we also celebrated World Teachers Day on Oct. 5 and National Coaches Day on Oct. 6. As always, we want to thank our teachers and coaches for investing their time and talent into our students and families.

Additionally, October is also National Principals Month. Across our 24 schools, we have the best elementary and secondary school principals a school district could ask for! We invite you to join us in thanking our school leaders for all they do for our students, staff and families.

Thank you for reading this Family Update in its entirety. Below, you will find information, news and updates regarding Possip Family Pulse Check, voting registration deadline, YES Prep student lottery applications, getting test ready, FAFSA/TAFSA applications now open and National School Lunch Week.

NORTHLINE SECONDARY’S NEW HOME

We are so excited to announce that the Northline Secondary Revolutionaries will be moving into their new building off Little York next week! Students will step foot into their new school on October 19!

Northline Secondary was founded in 2017 to provide a high-quality, college-prep education to children in the Northline community. Since then, we have seen more families looking to attend. The new building will house middle and high school students under the same roof and will include a full-size soccer field, specialty labs for science and art and a two-story library with quiet loft study space for students.

We look forward to you having the opportunity to settle into your new home, Revolutionaries!

POSSIP FAMILY PULSE CHECK – COMPLETE BY SUN. OCT. 9

Families, your voice matters!

We need to hear what's working for you and what your family needs. MARK YOUR CALENDAR - STUDENT LOTTERY APPLICATION OPENS FRI. OCT. 14

It's that time of year again! The YES Prep annual lottery application for the 2023-2024 school year will open Friday, October 14! This year we are launching our new enrollment platform, SchoolMint Enroll. This platform brings a sleek look and a smoother application process. Both new to YES and existing families will need to create a new login to apply.

Additionally, we invite each of our YES Prep families to apply for your YES Prep legacy. Siblings of current YES Prep students who apply receive priority within the lottery.

The highest compliment families can give us is the referral of family and friends! We need your help getting the word out! If you know a family that may be interested in YES Prep, please send them our way. For more information on YES Prep enrollment, please visit yesprep.org/sayyes

Attention Northbrook families: The application to apply for YES Prep Northbrook Middle and YES Prep Northbrook High schools will open on Nov. 14, 2022, at 9 a.m. To learn more about the lottery process for these two schools, click here.

SHOW US WHAT YOU KNOW: GET TEST READY!

There are several tests coming up in the next couple of weeks that your child will be taking at school. Below are the test and dates you should expect your child to take. Plus, prior to taking any exam or assessment, you can help your child prepare by encouraging them to study for the upcoming exam(s), get a full eight hours of sleep, eat a good breakfast the morning of an exam and review their test-taking strategies.

Elementary math and reading fall diagnostics will be given to students in grades 3-4 on Tues., Nov. 1 and Thurs., Nov. 3. Diagnostics are tests that are given to:

  • Assess student learning – identifying your child’s strengths and areas for additional focus
  • Provide students feedback to help them grow
  • Adjust instruction so we can better prepare all students on their college-ready journey

Secondary Common Assessments (CAs) are final exams for a course and are taken by all secondary students (grades 6-12). CA exams will be on Mon.-Thurs., Oct. 10-13. CAs are taken in English, mathematics, science, social studies and world languages classes. Common Assessments are tests that are given to:

  • Assess student learning – identifying your child’s strengths and areas for additional focus
  • Give students feedback to help them grow
  • Adjust instruction so we can better prepare all students on their college-ready journey

Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) is a pre-college assessment that measures reading, writing and math as part of college admissions, administered by CollegeBoard. We are excited to offer SAT School Day on Wed., Oct. 12 where all our seniors will take the SAT at their school. The SAT is given to students to:

  • Assess their learning over the course of their high school career
  • Give access to colleges of their choice depending on their scores

Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS) is an assessment system that determines the English language proficiency of English learners (ELs) in four domains: listening, speaking, reading and writing. TELPAS diagnostics will be happening at all secondary schools (grades 6-12) from Oct. 18 – Nov. 4 and at all elementary schools (grades 2-4) on Mon.-Fri., Oct. 24-28. TELPAS diagnostics are tests that are given to:

  • Assess student master of the English language– identifying your child’s strengths and areas for additional focus
  • Adjust instruction so we can better prepare all students on their college-ready journey
  • Gather YES Prep data on how we can improve between Fall and Spring testing in order to see growth

Good luck to all our students!

YES PREP HOSTED 16TH ANNUAL COLLEGE FAIR ON OCT. 3

This past Mon., Oct. 3, 2022, we hosted our 16th Annual College Fair where over 3,400 YES Prep students had the opportunity to interact with representatives from over 120 colleges and universities from across the United States.

Participating students interacted with a wide variety of colleges, from two to four-year institutions and local to out-of-state. Students also received information from the Houston Health Department about Texas’s vaccination tracker program, specifically the importance of receiving their meningitis vaccine to attend a college in Texas.

If your son or daughter attended, ask them about the colleges they interacted with and review the brochures they brought home. These conversations are important in understanding where they may be applying to college.

FAFSA/TASFA FINANCIAL AID APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA) opened on Sat., Oct. 1. From 2021, the State of Texas requires all seniors to submit either the FAFSA or the TASFA to graduate. YES Prep college counselors are here to help all seniors in the Class of 2023 complete these documents.

In addition, students applying to private colleges and universities may also be required to submit the CCS Profile. All the applications for financial aid help colleges and universities determine students’ eligibility for loans, grants and scholarships.

Seniors will have the opportunity to work with their college counselors on applying for financial aid during seminar; so be sure to have your 2021 tax return on hand as this will be one of the main documents needed to apply for federal student aid.

Between Nov. 7-18, YES Prep schools will be hosting information nights to assist students and families having issues completing the FAFSA or TASFA. Look out for information from your school college counselors about these dates later in October.

Click here to learn more about the different types of financial aid applications available.

NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH WEEK - OCT. 10-14

National School Lunch Week will be taking place from October 10 to 14. This year's theme is "Get Your Day in Gear with a Healthy School Lunch!” During this week students will have a chance to win daily prizes when they go through the lunch line!

Please visit yesprep.org/menu for our weekly lunch menus.

Attention Eisenhower & Northbrook families: The breakfast and lunch meals offered at your schools are done so through our partnership districts.

YES PREP ORGANIZÓ LA 16.ª FERIA ANUAL DE UNIVERSIDADES EL 3 DE OCTUBRE
