This month we celebrate the women in our lives and at our campus and recognize them for all of the hard work they put into making a difference in our Legend's lives. This month represents a moment to reflect on the challenges women have overcome to get to where we are and the road we have ahead. We are celebrating the women of North Forest by acknowledging their accomplishments and the work that they do to impact the education system.

To kick start IWM (International Women's Month), we asked staff to come in dressed in red on March 8th, International Women's Day, to recognize the significance of this month. Check out our staff pic below:

We asked our staff to name women on our team that makes our campus EPIC! Check out what they had to say:

"I would definitely like to recognize Lauren Lightfoot! Lauren is an excellent leader who embodies all of the characteristics [of a leader]. She is caring and empathetic while also still holding us to the highest of expectations, even beyond the bar of YPNF. Lauren has stretched me professionally this year and walked right along side me cheering on my success. Even days when I wanted to give up because I didn’t feel like I was truly making a difference, Lauren was there to scoop me up and give me the encouragement and support I needed to keep moving forward. It has been an honor to serve as a DOI under her leadership this year!"

- Juaquita Sims, Dean of Instruction

"I would also like to highlight Whitney who has felt like a big sister to me these past two years. I have learned so much from her in and out of work (such as how to be better at saving 😊 ). Whitney always pushes our students to form long range goals and challenges them when they lower their own expectations. Whitney encourages the people around her to be the best version of themselves. She leads with kindness, grace, and compassion. She brings joy to my job every single day!"

- Anais Zumaya, College Counselor

I would like to recognize Jessica Shittu as someone who embodies what it means to be EPIC. Jessica came into North Forest this year and fit right in with our students and culture. She treats kids with respect, empowers them to reach their full potential and always greets them with a smile. Jessica is a great person to work with because she is extremely intuitive of what others need to be successful. Whether it is leaving snacks on our desks, or forcing us to take a break for lunch- she always looks out for the people around her. In her personal life she is admirable as she pursues her PHD and leads a nonprofit organization where she empowers students in the community to learn skills that will help them gain access and opportunities. She is a joy to work with and I have learned so much from her this past year. She empowers me to use my voice, to advocate for myself, and to prioritize my well being above all else. I think everyone needs a woman like Jessica in their life!

- Anais Zumaya, College Counselor

"Michelle Nealy comes to mind when I think of an EPIC Legend. She is always here and always willing to help in any way possible. When I started here, she was really helpful in teaching me the “YES Prep Way” and she was patient and kind. I was welcomed into an office space and provided all the knowledge I needed to be successful in my new role. Michelle operates with integrity and does not waiver from high expectations for herself and others. She often moves in silence but has a powerfully contributing voice when it comes to making decisions in the best interest of YPNF students and staff. I am especially excited to be serving under her as our next DOA for the 22-23 school year!

- Juaquita Sims, Dean of Instruction

"I would like to nominate TaMia Myers. She is a dynamic individual. Her way of speaking to you makes you feel heard, valued and understood. She is a leader in answering any unanswered questions, leading her students forward (they scored high in our district on their tests), gives good classroom management advise and knows how to have a good time. Her Grind is unmatched! She gets creative in class and makes learning about history fun and interactive."

- Darleny Del Rosario, Theatre Teacher

In addition to celebrating our Big Legends, we wanted to ensure that our Little Legends felt all of the appreciation too! Our student support counselors Joselyn Anderson and Latasha Brown organized an event where they distributed women empowering stickers and red wristbands to the young women of our campus.
